Do I need a CRM as a tradie?

By Chris Goldsworthy, founder of GOLDSTACK ·

Short answer

If enquiries ever get lost, quotes don't get followed up, or you can't remember what you did for a customer last year, then yes. A CRM is simply one place for every customer, enquiry, quote and conversation. The value comes from what runs off it: automatic replies, quote follow-ups, reminders, invoices and review requests.

What a CRM actually is

A customer list that remembers everything: who they are, how they contacted you, what you quoted, what you did, and what's next. It replaces the notebook, the spreadsheet and your memory.

Signs you need one

Missed calls you never got back to. Quotes that went quiet and nobody followed up. Customers you'd like to remind about a service but can't find. If any of those sound familiar, you'll get value from one.

The CRM isn't the point

On its own, a CRM is another thing to update. Its value is the automation it allows: every enquiry acknowledged, every quote followed up, every invoice chased and every happy customer asked for a review, without you remembering.

Keep it simple

Set it up around how you already work. If it needs lots of manual data entry, it won't last past the first busy month.

Common questions

Is a CRM worth it for a one-person business?

Often more so. You're the one who'd otherwise have to remember everything.

Does it replace my accounting software?

No. It sits alongside it and sends invoices and payments across.

How long does setup take?

Simple setups can be running quickly. Importing your existing customers is usually the longest step.

Will I have to type everything in?

A good setup captures enquiries automatically, so you don't.
