What is a project health dashboard for a construction company?

By Chris Goldsworthy, founder of GOLDSTACK ·

Short answer

A project health dashboard is one screen that shows every live project with a red, amber or green score for safety, quality, time, cost and contracts. It updates automatically from your project management, safety and accounting software, so directors see which jobs need attention without waiting for PM reports.

What it replaces

In most construction companies, project status lives in PM reports, spreadsheets and people's heads. Each PM reports a little differently. Directors read a stack of reports once a month and try to work out which job is actually in trouble.

A dashboard replaces the stack with one view. Same five areas, same rules, every project, every week.

What it shows

A portfolio view. Every project in one list, with its five scores side by side. Reds float to the top.

A project view. Open one job and see why it is amber: which defects, which RFIs, which subcontractor documents, which variations.

A trend. Whether each area is getting better or worse over the last few weeks. A project that has been amber for six weeks is a different conversation from one that turned amber yesterday.

Lead and lag indicators

A good dashboard mixes both. Lag indicators tell you what already happened: incidents, cost overruns, missed handover dates. Lead indicators warn you first: open hazards, ageing defects, unanswered RFIs, unpriced variations, expired subcontractor insurances.

If your dashboard only shows lag indicators, it's a report card. You want an early warning system.

Who uses it

Directors use the portfolio view to decide where to spend their week. PMs use the project view to clear their ambers before they turn red. Site managers see the safety and quality items that belong to them. Everyone works from the same numbers, which ends a lot of arguments.

What it takes to set up

The setup is mostly agreeing the rules: what turns each area amber or red. Then the connections to your existing software are built so the numbers flow in on their own. A sensible order is to start with one or two projects, check the scores match what your PMs already know, then roll it across the portfolio.

Common questions

What does RAG status mean?

RAG stands for red, amber, green. Green means on track, amber means trending the wrong way and worth a look, red means a decision is needed now.

What software does a project health dashboard connect to?

Usually your project management system, your safety and compliance system and your accounting software. The aim is to read from what you already use rather than add another system to fill in.

How is this different from a monthly project report?

A monthly report is written by a person after the fact. A dashboard updates on its own from live data and highlights early warnings, so you can act before the month closes.

Can I see it on my phone?

Yes. The portfolio view and the red alerts are built to be checked from your phone, so you can see where things stand before you get to site.
