What does RAG status mean in construction project reporting?
RAG stands for red, amber and green. In construction reporting, each project (or each area of a project, like safety, quality, time, cost and contracts) gets a colour: green means on track, amber means something is trending the wrong way and needs watching, and red means a decision is needed now. It works when the rules behind each colour are written down and applied the same way on every job.
Why builders use colours instead of numbers
A director reading ten project reports doesn't need every number. They need to know where to look first. A colour does that in a second, and it lets you compare a small fit-out with a large build on the same screen.
What each colour should mean
Green: nothing needs you this week.
Amber: something is drifting. Someone should look at it before the next review.
Red: a decision or action is needed now, and someone owns it.
Set the rules once
The most common failure is colours that depend on who wrote the report. Fix that by writing the thresholds down. For example: a defect open longer than an agreed number of days turns quality amber; a subcontractor with expired insurance turns contracts red; the critical path slipping past an agreed tolerance turns time amber.
Agree the rules with your project managers. If they helped set them, they'll trust the colours instead of arguing about them.
Keep it honest
RAG only works if red is allowed. If every project is always green, the system is being managed, not used. Treat red as a prompt for a conversation, not a mark against the PM. The early reds are the ones that save you money.
Common questions
What does RAG stand for?
Red, amber, green. It's a simple traffic-light status used in project reporting.
Should RAG be for the whole project or each area?
Both. Score each area (safety, quality, time, cost, contracts) and roll them up so the project shows its worst colour.
Who decides the colour?
The rules do. Agree thresholds once, then let the data set the colour so it's consistent across jobs.
Can RAG status update automatically?
Yes. When the scores read from your project, safety and accounting software, the colours update without anyone typing them in.
